Walking the fortifications

Historic fortifications

Fort de la Bayarde in Carqueiranne, the Batterie du Cap Nègre in Six-Fours-les-Plages, the Tour Royale in Toulon… no fewer than 30 fortifications are to be found along the coastline of the TPM. The "Walking the Fortifications" brochure offers an introduction to this wealth of heritage and architectural history and suggests walks that will take your breath away.

Preserving and protecting the forts

Over the centuries, these forts, gun batteries and cannon emplacements played an important role in defending the Mediterranean coastline. Today they are part of the area's rich heritage and of considerable historic, architectural and artistic importance, illustrating the evolution of military construction and engineering.

Toulon Provence Méditerranée takes its responsibility for developing its region and its heritage very seriously, and its member communes have joined forces to focus on the fortifications that have protected the region for so long, some of them from as far back as the 4th century BCE.

The TPM metropolitan area decided to produce a brochure recounting the history of some of the main fortifications along its coastline. The guide contains descriptions of the thirty selected sites plus practical information (access, opening hours, etc.) – in short, everything you need to explore these historic sites, many of which also offer vantage points for some stunning views of the region.
