Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Toulon
What an event ! And an innovation. From September 9th to 11th 2016 Toulon will be the only French host for the the mythical America's Cup first stage : the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series (LVACWS). On the water the fastest boats and the greatest sailors in the world will be racing ! The six competing crews will be on their flying catamarans – these high-tech speed demons – in front of Toulon’s beaches at Le Mourillon. It’s an opportunity for the area to bring together sailing fanatics and the general public to support the French team Groupama Team France and experience a festive spectacular event.
Six prestigious crews are competing in the 35th edition (the defending champion and 5 challengers) and they will be coming to race in Toulon next September ; the site has been chosen for its suitable sailing area and ideal conditions. The racing will take place from 14h to 15h30 (and shown on giant screens) but there will also be many other events : culture, parades, concerts, sporting challenges, exhibitions, … which will be organised on the beaches in Le Mourillon, by the port, or in the city centre. For three days the whole city will be buzzing with America!
Toulon the only French stage
Hubert Falco, Toulon’s mayor and President of Toulon Provence Méditerranée agglomeration community (major event partner) says he is "proud to welcome this great worldwide sailing competition. It shows the interest, the influence, and the attraction of our bay, which is one of the most beautiful in Europe. It also proves our area’s capability to host and organise international events ».
For Franck Proffit, experienced sailor and multihull specialist managing the "Association Cup Toulon Organisation" which is in charge of organising the stage in Toulon "The Cup is excellence itself. This excellence will shine for Toulon, the area, and the Var,..."
The French team Groupama Team France led by Franck Cammas, Michel Desjoyeaux and Olivier de Kersauzon is delighted about the “home” stage. Franck Cammas says « It’s really fabulous to be able to sail in front of a home crowd. It’s a great opportunity to show everyone what the new format America’s Cup is about. The French love speed and multihull sailing. It’s exhilarating for sailors and attractive for spectators ».
An unprecedented spectacle on the water
The fastest boats in the world, and the best sailors and managers will be competing on the water at the Rade des Vignettes in Toulon over a zone 1 km wide and 2 km long. The six competing crews will be on their flying catamarans – these high-tech speed demons – in front of the Mourillon beaches. For this edition, the boats will be shorter (15 m instead of 21,6 m) and faster (over de 70 km/h). The fleet of AC45’s - powerful hydrofoil one-design catamarans driven by wingsails, should provide spectacular, high speed racing which the crowd can admire from the beaches, which is exceptional !
A free festival for the whole population
Hubert Falco announced it : "We are going to organise a free festival for the whole population!". His will is to make the event accessible for everyone : where it is normally ticket-based, it will be totally free in Toulon.
Apart from the racing in the afternoon from 14h to 15h30 (which will be shown on giant videoscreens) a multitude of cultural events, parades, concerts, sporting challenges, exhibitions,… will be organised on the beaches of the Mourillon area, at the port, or in the city centre. For three days the whole city will be buzzing with America !
In the city centre and on the beaches you will be able to see marching bands, street artists, stilt-walkers, musical parades with « wild piano », impressive performances (like « As the world Tipped » on the Mourillon beaches and « Transe Express » in the city centre), shows and circus school. Pupils from the TPM music school will be playing concerts on the ship « La Grace » moored in the port of Toulon. Many sporting activities will also be on offer for the public, both on dryland and on the water. Beach rugby, Sandball, Beach volley, aquagym, windsurfing, canoeing,… In the race village between the Anse des Pins and the Anse Tabarly, there will be a Maritime Science Park. There will be conferences, documentaries, interactive workshops, simulations,…
One of the highlights will be a giant concert on the Mourillon beaches, and the Balèti (a design market, fête, music, local specialities,…) at Port Saint-Louis on Sunday from 18h until midnight will be the closing event of these three exceptional days.
